Liberia’s Greatest Chapter Still Lies Ahead, Independence Thanksgiving Service Preacher Declares

Held under the national theme, “Strengthening National Identity Through Liberian-Led Historical Leadership,” the service focused on preserving Liberia’s history, deepening national identity, and inspiring collective responsibility as the nation commemorated 179 years of independence.

Delivering the sermon, Senior Advisor to U.S. President Donald Trump for the White House Faith Office, Paula White-Cain, described Liberia’s 179-year journey as enduring evidence of God’s sustaining grace. She said the nation’s resilience through civil conflict, political transitions, economic hardship, public health emergencies, and other challenges demonstrates that Liberia remains a nation of purpose with a future full of promise.

Drawing from the biblical account of Nehemiah, Rev. White-Cain urged Liberians to recognize that nation-building extends beyond reconstructing roads, buildings, and public institutions. Lasting progress, she said, begins with restoring hope, strengthening unity, rebuilding confidence, and renewing a shared sense of national identity. She encouraged Liberians to move beyond the painful chapters of the past and work together to build a stronger and more prosperous nation.

The American evangelist emphasized that understanding Liberia’s history is essential to shaping its future, encouraging citizens to preserve and pass on the nation’s story to future generations. A nation that remembers its past, she noted, is better equipped to protect its identity, uphold its values, and move confidently toward the future.

Reflecting on Liberia’s distinction as Africa’s first independent republic, Rev. White-Cain described the country’s founding as a powerful symbol of liberty and freedom. She called on Liberians to honor that legacy through patriotism, responsible citizenship, ethical leadership, and a renewed commitment to national unity.

She also urged leaders at every level to embrace servant leadership characterized by humility, integrity, accountability, and prayer. Sustainable national transformation, she said, begins when individuals accept responsibility for advancing positive change within their communities and across the country.

While acknowledging Liberia’s abundant natural wealth; including its fertile agricultural land, forests, waterways, coastline, and strategic geographic location, Rev. White-Cain maintained that the nation’s greatest asset is its people. She encouraged continued investment in human capital, particularly in young people, whom she described as the foundation of Liberia’s future growth and prosperity.

Addressing Liberia’s youth directly, she challenged them to remain rooted in the nation’s values and identity while preparing themselves to become principled leaders dedicated to preserving Liberia’s heritage and advancing its development.

Concluding her message, the preacher offered prayers for peace, reconciliation, spiritual renewal, and continued national progress. She expressed confidence that Liberia’s greatest chapter still lies ahead as its people remain united in purpose, strengthen their national identity, and continue building a nation anchored in faith, resilience, and shared responsibility.

The 179th Independence Day Thanksgiving and Intercessory Service formed part of activities commemorating Liberia’s Independence Anniversary, bringing together government officials, members of the clergy, traditional leaders, development partners, and citizens in thanksgiving and prayer for the nation’s continued peace, stability, unity, and sustainable development.
